General Surgery PG Induction Guide 2026-27: Training, Books, Hospitals and Cut-offs
General surgery covers the abdomen, breast, endocrine glands, trauma and emergency surgery, and it is the base for most surgical subspecialties. Seats are spread across nearly every public teaching hospital.
Training routes
FCPS-II General Surgery usually takes four years, with the IMM after the first two.
Trainees sit the CPSP Intermediate Module (IMM) after the first two years and must pass it to continue.
Hospitals we know of that train in general surgery: Diploma at 6 hospitals, FCPS-II at 101 hospitals, MCPS at 9 hospitals, MD at 2 hospitals, MS at 15 hospitals. These counts come from the Programme Finder and update as new adverts are posted.
FCPS Part I
For CPSP training you need a pass in FCPS Part I in Surgery and Allied before you can register. Some hospitals and universities also run their own entry test, usually multiple-choice questions on basic and clinical sciences. Practise BCQs every day; our question of the day and the Path2Pass question banks are a good place to start.
Standard basic science texts for Part I: Snell's Clinical Anatomy, Guyton and Hall Medical Physiology, Robbins Basic Pathology, Lippincott or Katzung Pharmacology, and Langman's Medical Embryology.
