Ophthalmology PG Induction Guide 2026–27
Books to Study · Hospitals Offering Training · Previous Ophthalmology Inductions
Ophthalmology is one of the most competitive postgraduate specialties in Pakistan, with a small number of seats at most institutions and a dedicated FCPS Part-I paper of its own. This guide brings together everything an aspiring eye surgeon needs in one place: the training pathways, the official CPSP reading list, the review books trainees actually use, the induction-test resources, the hospitals that train ophthalmology residents across Pakistan, and direct links to every previous ophthalmology induction we have published on drimranaliarain.com.
1. Training Pathways in Ophthalmology
| Programme | Duration | Basic Eligibility |
|---|---|---|
| FCPS-II Ophthalmology (CPSP) | 4 years | MBBS, PMDC registration, one-year house job and FCPS Part-I in Ophthalmology |
| MCPS Ophthalmology (CPSP) | 2 years | MBBS with a one-year house job from a PMDC-recognised institution (no FCPS-I needed) |
| MS Ophthalmology (University) | 4–5 years | MBBS and house job; admission through university entry tests such as UHS PGET (Punjab), DUHS, LUMHS or SMBBMU (Sindh) |
| Post Fellowship / Second Fellowship | 1–2 years | FCPS-II Ophthalmology; subspecialties include Vitreoretina, Paediatric Ophthalmology and Orbit & Oculoplastics |
Important: CPSP requires a candidate who passes FCPS Part-I to register as an FCPS resident within three years of passing. Plan your induction attempts accordingly.
2. FCPS Part-I Ophthalmology – Exam Format
The FCPS Part-I Ophthalmology examination is computer based and consists of two papers of 100 single-best-answer MCQs each:
- Paper I (common to all specialties): Anatomy (embryology, histology, gross and neuroanatomy), Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Pharmacology, Research & Biostatistics, and Behavioural Sciences & Medical Ethics.
- Paper II (ophthalmology-specific basic sciences): embryology and histology of the eye and adnexa, anatomy of the orbit, globe, visual pathways and cranial nerves, ocular physiology (tear film, aqueous dynamics, lens, accommodation, colour vision, electrophysiology), optics (lenses, prisms, schematic eye, LASER principles), ocular pharmacology and ocular pathology.
Always download the latest FCPS Part-I Ophthalmology curriculum from the CPSP website before starting, as the syllabus defines what you need to read.
3. Books to Study – Official CPSP Recommended Reading List
| Subject | Book | Author / Publisher |
|---|---|---|
| Ocular Anatomy | Clinical Anatomy of the Eye | Richard S. Snell |
| Ocular Physiology, Pharmacology & Basics | Ophthalmology: Principles and Concepts | Frank W. Newell |
| Ocular Physiology | Adler’s Physiology of the Eye: Clinical Application | Adler |
| Basic Sciences & Optics | Basic & Clinical Science Course (BCSC) – Sections 2 & 3 | American Academy of Ophthalmology |
| Ocular Pathology | Ocular Pathology: Clinical Applications & Self-Assessment | Maurice Rabb & David Apple |
| General Physiology | Guyton and Hall Textbook of Medical Physiology | John E. Hall |
| Embryology | Langman’s Medical Embryology | T. W. Sadler |
| Pharmacology | Lippincott’s Illustrated Reviews: Pharmacology | Lippincott |
| Microbiology | Jawetz, Melnick & Adelberg’s Medical Microbiology | Jawetz et al. |
| Biostatistics | Medical Statistics from Scratch (3rd ed.) | David Bowers (Wiley-Blackwell) |
4. Review Books & Notes Popular with Pakistani Candidates
Alongside the standard texts, successful candidates usually rely on local review books and past-paper collections for high-yield revision:
- Ramay’s Review of FCPS Part 1 Ophthalmology (5th Edition) – Dr Muhammad Asif Ramay. The most widely used ophthalmology-specific review, with high-yield concepts and past questions.
- Chandkia’s ophthalmology BCQ books – traditionally regarded by seniors as the second most important resource after Snell; solve them completely, preferably in a study group.
- Osama’s Ophthalmology Notes for FCPS Part 1 (2nd Edition) – compact notes useful for final revision.
- FCPS Pearls Radiant Notes (Dr Rafiullah) and Tanveer Notes – for the general Paper I subjects.
- First Aid for the USMLE Step 1 – for general pharmacology, microbiology, vitamins, histology and biostatistics.
- High-Yield Embryology, BRS Physiology and Kaplan Neuroanatomy – fast, targeted coverage of Paper I topics.
- Recent past papers / recalls – repeated questions are common, so finish the most recent papers more than once.
Senior’s tip: Eye anatomy is the biggest single chunk of Paper II – read Snell’s Clinical Anatomy of the Eye thoroughly from start to finish, and cover ocular physiology, embryology and pharmacology from Newell. For Paper I, stick to the syllabus rather than reading entire textbooks.
5. Books for Hospital Induction / Entry Tests & Interviews
FCPS Part-I is a screening test; CPSP allows accredited institutes to select residents through their own entry tests and interview panels. Hospital entry tests (and MCPS/MS admission tests) are usually clinical, so prepare from clinical ophthalmology books:
- Basic Ophthalmology – Renu Jogi, or Short Textbook of Ophthalmology – Prof. Jatoi: familiar final-year books that cover most clinical entry-test questions (also recommended in our AKU exam guide).
- Comprehensive Ophthalmology – A. K. Khurana: detailed but readable clinical coverage.
- Parsons’ Diseases of the Eye – classic clinical reference.
- Kanski’s Clinical Ophthalmology: A Systematic Approach – the standard clinical atlas; very useful for image-based questions and interviews.
- The Wills Eye Manual and Oxford Handbook of Ophthalmology – quick reference for emergencies and management questions.
- General Medicine & Surgery revision – integrated papers (e.g. AKUH, Shifa, JPMC central tests) also include general clinical MCQs; practise with a question bank such as Path2Pass.

8. Induction Timeline – When Ophthalmology Seats Open
Most institutions run two cycles a year. January sessions are advertised from October to December, and July sessions from April to June. The Karachi eye hospitals (LRBT, Hashmanis, Isra, POB) and SIOVS often announce separately from the big teaching hospitals, so check both. Keep scanned copies of your MBBS degree, PMDC certificate, house-job certificate, FCPS-I result and CV ready before the cycle starts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which is the single most important book for FCPS Part-I Ophthalmology?
Snell’s Clinical Anatomy of the Eye, followed by a full review of Ramay’s/Chandkia’s BCQs and recent past papers.
Can I start ophthalmology training without FCPS Part-I?
Yes – MCPS Ophthalmology (2 years) and MS Ophthalmology (university programmes) need MBBS and a house job. FCPS-II requires FCPS Part-I in Ophthalmology.
Which books should I read for hospital entry tests?
Jogi or Jatoi for quick clinical coverage, Khurana or Parsons for depth, and Kanski for images and interviews, plus general medicine/surgery MCQs for integrated papers.
How many ophthalmology seats are available?
Seats are small per institution – for example, the expected JPMC induction listed 4 ophthalmology seats, and the last UHS PGET cycle listed 19 FCPS and 19 MS seats across Punjab.
