Orthopaedic Surgery PG Induction Guide 2026-27: Training, Books, Hospitals and Cut-offs
Orthopaedic surgery treats fractures, joint disease, spine problems, sports injuries and bone infections. Road traffic injuries keep the workload high, and most public hospitals have an orthopaedic unit.
Training routes
FCPS-II Orthopaedic Surgery usually takes five years: two years of surgery leading to the IMM, then three years in orthopaedics.
Trainees sit the CPSP Intermediate Module (IMM) after the first two years and must pass it to continue.
Hospitals we know of that train in orthopaedic surgery: Diploma at 1 hospital, FCPS-II at 45 hospitals, MCPS at 3 hospitals, MD at 1 hospital, MS at 7 hospitals. These counts come from the Programme Finder and update as new adverts are posted.
FCPS Part I
For CPSP training you need a pass in FCPS Part I in Surgery and Allied before you can register. Some hospitals and universities also run their own entry test, usually multiple-choice questions on basic and clinical sciences. Practise BCQs every day; our question of the day and the Path2Pass question banks are a good place to start.
Standard basic science texts for Part I: Snell's Clinical Anatomy, Guyton and Hall Medical Physiology, Robbins Basic Pathology, Lippincott or Katzung Pharmacology, and Langman's Medical Embryology.
