Neurology covers stroke, epilepsy, movement disorders, neuromuscular disease and headache. Only a few hospitals train neurologists, so seats are limited.

Training routes

FCPS-II Neurology usually takes five years: two years of medicine leading to the IMM, then three years in neurology.

Trainees sit the CPSP Intermediate Module (IMM) after the first two years and must pass it to continue.

Hospitals we know of that train in neurology: Diploma at 3 hospitals, FCPS-II at 22 hospitals, MCPS at 1 hospital, MD at 1 hospital, MS at 1 hospital. These counts come from the Programme Finder and update as new adverts are posted.

FCPS Part I

For CPSP training you need a pass in FCPS Part I in Medicine and Allied before you can register. Some hospitals and universities also run their own entry test, usually multiple-choice questions on basic and clinical sciences. Practise BCQs every day; our question of the day and the Path2Pass question banks are a good place to start.

Standard basic science texts for Part I: Snell's Clinical Anatomy, Guyton and Hall Medical Physiology, Robbins Basic Pathology, Lippincott or Katzung Pharmacology, and Langman's Medical Embryology.

Books for training and the induction test

  • Adams and Victor's Principles of Neurology
  • Clinical Neurology (Aminoff, Greenberg, Simon)
  • Lindsay's Neurology and Neurosurgery Illustrated
  • Oxford Handbook of Neurology
  • Davidson's Principles and Practice of Medicine (neurology chapters)

CPSP publishes the official reading list with each curriculum. Check it on cpsp.edu.pk, since editions and lists change.
