Psychiatry covers mental illness across all ages, from mood and psychotic disorders to addiction and child psychiatry. Pakistan has very few psychiatrists for its population, so trained specialists are in demand.

Training routes

FCPS-II Psychiatry usually takes four years. MCPS is offered at some hospitals. Check the current CPSP regulations for whether psychiatry trainees sit the IMM.

Hospitals we know of that train in psychiatry: Diploma at 1 hospital, FCPS-II at 18 hospitals, MCPS at 6 hospitals. These counts come from the Programme Finder and update as new adverts are posted.

FCPS Part I

For CPSP training you need a pass in FCPS Part I in Medicine and Allied before you can register. Some hospitals and universities also run their own entry test, usually multiple-choice questions on basic and clinical sciences. Practise BCQs every day; our question of the day and the Path2Pass question banks are a good place to start.

Standard basic science texts for Part I: Snell's Clinical Anatomy, Guyton and Hall Medical Physiology, Robbins Basic Pathology, Lippincott or Katzung Pharmacology, and Langman's Medical Embryology.

Books for training and the induction test

  • Kaplan and Sadock's Synopsis of Psychiatry
  • Shorter Oxford Textbook of Psychiatry
  • Oxford Handbook of Psychiatry
  • Fish's Clinical Psychopathology
  • Maudsley Prescribing Guidelines in Psychiatry

CPSP publishes the official reading list with each curriculum. Check it on cpsp.edu.pk, since editions and lists change.
