Diploma in Ultrasound – MBBS/Technicians (For Karachi Residents)
1. For MBBS Doctors (Postgraduate Training)
If you are a doctor looking for recognized certification to practice sonology, these are your best options. Note that most university-based programs are technically “Certificates” (6 months) but are widely accepted as standard training.
Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS)
DUHS is the most prestigious option for a university-accredited certification.
• Programs Offered:
• Basic Certificate Course in Ultrasonography: usually a 6-month program covering Abdomen and Pelvis.
• Certificate Course in Color Doppler: A 3-month advanced course (requires the basic course as a prerequisite).
• Location: Ojha Campus (Dow Institute of Radiology).
• Admissions: typically open twice a year (check their “Postgraduate Diploma & Short Courses” advertisements).
• Estimated Cost: approx. PKR 115,000 – 150,000 (varies by session).
Sohail University (Begum Akhtar Rukhsana Memorial Welfare Trust Hospital)
• Program: Medical Ultrasound Course.
• Duration: 1 Year.

Private Training Institutes (Doctor-Focused)
These centers are popular for hands-on skills and often offer their own “Diplomas” or certificates.
• Tanveer Ultrasound Clinic (TUC): Highly regarded for practical training. They offer Basic (Abd/Gynae) and Advanced (Doppler) courses specifically for MBBS doctors.
• Medi-Nix: Located in PECHS, they have a long history of training doctors in Sonology and Echocardiography.
• Dr. Farah Essa Academy: Offers a 1-Year Diploma in Ultrasound located in Gulshan-e-Iqbal.
• De Duce Ultrasound & Training Institute: Located in DHA Phase 8, known for expert-led training for doctors.
2. For Technicians (Non-Doctors)
If you are not a doctor and want to become an Ultrasound Technician/Sonographer, you need a diploma recognized by the Sindh Board of Technical Education (SBTE).
• Taqwa Institute of Physiotherapy & Health Sciences: Offers a Diploma in Ultrasonography (1 year).
• Eligibility: Matric (Biology).
• Affiliation: SBTE approved.
• Skill Development Council (SDC) Karachi: Often runs technical courses allied with hospitals.
• Al-Khidmat / Al-Mustafa Medical Centers: Frequently offer vocational paramedic training, including X-Ray and Ultrasound technician courses.
Important Tip for Doctors
If you are a doctor, be aware that the PMDC (Pakistan Medical & Dental Council) regulations regarding “Sonologist” titles change frequently. A university-affiliated certificate (like Dow or JSMU) carries more weight for credentials than a private clinic’s diploma, even if the private clinic offers better hands-on training. Many doctors choose to do both: a university course for the paper and a private clinic course for the actual scanning skills.
