Analysis of the AKU Residency 2027 Selection List

The figures below are calculated directly from the official notification and are expressed as percentages and ratios. The waiting-to-selected ratio shows how many waiting-list candidates stand behind each selected candidate in a programme; a higher ratio means a deeper reserve pool and, for waiting-list candidates, a longer queue for any seat that becomes vacant.

1. Overall Picture

  • Selected candidates make up 45.7% of all candidates named in the notification, while waiting-list candidates make up 54.3%.
  • Across all programmes, the overall waiting-to-selected ratio is 1.19:1 — slightly more than one reserve candidate for every seat offered.
  • No Application Number appears in more than one programme or list, i.e. the overlap between lists is 0%.
  • 40.0% of programmes have a single seat on offer, and 17.1% of programmes have announced no waiting list at all.

2. Distribution by Specialty Group

Specialty GroupShare of All SelectionsShare of All Waiting-List PlacesWaiting : Selected
Medicine & Allied28.0%33.9%1.43:1
Surgery & Allied19.6%34.6%2.10:1
Obstetrics, Gynaecology & Paediatrics19.6%15.0%0.90:1
Pathology & Laboratory Medicine15.0%0.0%—
Diagnostics & Oncology11.2%7.9%0.83:1
Dentistry6.5%8.7%1.57:1
Medicine & Allied includes Cardiology, Neurology, Nephrology, Pulmonology, Haematology, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Emergency, Family and Community Medicine. Surgery & Allied includes Anaesthesiology and Ophthalmology.
  • Medicine & Allied programmes take the largest share of selections (28.0%).
  • Surgery & Allied programmes hold the largest share of waiting-list places (34.6%) and the highest group ratio (2.10:1), indicating the deepest reserve pools — driven mainly by Anaesthesiology and Orthopaedics.
  • Pathology & Laboratory Medicine accounts for 15.0% of selections but 0% of waiting-list places — none of its four subspecialties (Chemical Pathology, Haematology, Histopathology, Microbiology) announced a waiting list.
  • Obstetrics, Gynaecology & Paediatrics together take 19.6% of selections with a ratio below 1:1, largely because Paediatrics offers a comparatively large intake.

3. Largest Intakes

ProgrammeShare of All SelectionsWaiting : Selected
Paediatrics & Child Health14.0%0.67:1
Diagnostic Radiology8.4%0.89:1
Pathology – Histopathology8.4%—
Anaesthesiology7.5%2.38:1
Emergency Medicine5.6%1.50:1
Family Medicine5.6%1.50:1

Paediatrics & Child Health alone accounts for 14.0% of all selections. Together, Paediatrics, Diagnostic Radiology, Histopathology and Anaesthesiology account for 38.3% of every seat offered in this list.

4. Deepest Waiting Lists (Highest Waiting-to-Selected Ratio)

ProgrammeWaiting : SelectedShare of All Waiting-List Places
Ophthalmology5:13.9%
Orthopaedic Surgery (6 Years)5:13.9%
Psychiatry5:13.9%
Cardiothoracic Surgery (6 Years)3:12.4%
Clinical Haematology3:12.4%
Operative Dentistry3:12.4%
Orthopaedic Surgery (5 Years)3:12.4%
Anaesthesiology2.38:115.0%
Nephrology2:13.1%
  • Ophthalmology, Psychiatry and Orthopaedic Surgery (6 Years) show the steepest ratio at 5:1 — five reserve candidates for each seat.
  • Taken together, the two Orthopaedic Surgery tracks (5-year and 6-year) have a combined ratio of 4:1.
  • Anaesthesiology holds 15.0% of all waiting-list places in the notification — the single largest reserve pool — with a ratio of 2.38:1.
  • Programmes with a ratio of 0.5:1 to 0.67:1 — Neurology (3 Years), Urology (4 Years), Paediatrics and General Surgery — have short waiting lists relative to their intake.

5. What the Numbers Mean for Waiting-List Candidates

Because AKU states that the list is arranged by Application Number rather than merit, the serial number beside a waiting-list Application Number should not be read as a queue position. Movement from the waiting list depends entirely on selected candidates declining the offer or failing to complete documentation by 14 December 2026. In programmes with a single seat and a high ratio, a vacancy is less likely to reach every waiting-list candidate; in programmes with low ratios, the reserve pool is small relative to the intake.

Programmes Not Yet Announced

The results for Internal Medicine (2-Year and 4-Year) and Paediatric Surgery (4-Year) are scheduled for 16 November 2026. This post will be updated, and a separate notification will be shared on our WhatsApp channel once those lists are released.
