Job Description

The responsibilities listed for the Staff Nurse – Emergency Services are:

• Handover and takeover of incoming and outgoing shift unit or ward information related to patients, including introductions, patient files, medication charts, investigation reports, and intake and output charts.
• Provide direct patient care throughout the shift in a calm, courteous and tactful manner.
• Assure quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards, measuring health outcomes against patient care goals and standards, and making or recommending necessary adjustments.
• Resolve patient problems and needs by utilizing multi-disciplinary team strategies.
• Prepare medication requisitions and administer medication.
• Maintain a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations.
• Protect patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols, medication administration and storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations.
• Facilitate doctors and consultants on their rounds in the unit or ward and record instructions.
• Assist doctors with any procedure they may need to perform, prepare the patient physically and emotionally for these procedures and ensure the availability of all necessary equipment.
• Maintain accurate and complete documentation of nursing care and use correct charting techniques as per Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Carry out the doctors’ orders as prescribed and question any concern with prescribed treatment.
• Ensure the unit or ward medical supply requirements are well stocked, properly stored and readily available.
• Draw blood and perform other lab procedures on patients.
• Perform IV cannulation of patients, following the Clinical IPPs policy manual.
• Perform delegated patient and non-patient related tasks as directed by the Ward Incharge or Nursing Coordinator.
• Perform any other duties as assigned by the Supervisor or Head of the Department.
